Salsa and bachata, both in music and dance, will also experience a fresh wave of growth, style blending, and global influence during the summer of 2025 in Europe, especially in Spain. Bachata in particular is taking over dance floors, social media, festivals, and streaming platforms.
Even so, reggaetón and salsa remain in the spotlight, both musically and on the dance floor. In Spain especially, there is a clear trend shaping both dance styles and DJs’ playlists.
Developments on dance floors: fusions and new directions
In dance studios, clubs, and festivals, genres and movement styles are merging more and more. In the world of Bachata Sensual and Bachata Moderna, a clear trend is emerging: moving away from an overly ornate, exclusively sensual style toward more hybrid, stylistically diverse interpretations.
Bachata is increasingly blended with Zouk, Kizomba, touches of tango, or contemporary dance elements. These fusions not only increase variety but also add musical and interpretive depth. At the same time, this overload is leading many dancers toward a “flattening” and simplification of their style. Put simply, the majority now dance in a more straightforward way than just a few years ago.
It also seems that the era of constant close hold and ultra-tight figures is over. Leading is once again happening more through the hands, with less body-to-body guidance. As a dancer friend of mine put it: “More dance, less skin contact.”

Events like Sensual Week Cádiz or Madrid Bachatea show that there’s not only demand for novelty but also for creative versatility. Workshops focused on technique, musicality, and improvisation are becoming more popular. Notably, there’s now a growing trend of shines and footwork in bachata, with rising demand in workshops.
White sneakers take over
Fashion is also reflecting the shift: where dance shoes and stricter dress codes once dominated, today sneakers and casual clothing set the tone, signaling a stronger integration of urban and street dance styles. I’ve been observing this since 2019, and it’s continuing. In some clubs, you hardly see any dance shoes at all.
Salsa vs. Bachata: a changing scene
The Latin scene in Europe is experiencing a mixed moment. Salsa, as a traditional dance, still demands technical skill and musical sophistication, but it is clearly losing ground to bachata. At many parties, the music ratio is now roughly 30% salsa to 70% bachata. During the week, 100% bachata socials dominate, often playing just one salsa for every 8–10 bachatas. This means many new dancers are no longer learning comprehensive salsa technique, and even in major cities, the salsa level is often surprisingly low.
For younger generations, bachata feels more accessible, fashionable, and sensual—and it benefits from high visibility on TikTok and similar platforms. Salsa, in contrast, is often seen as more complex and “mature.” This is causing a split: separate dance spaces, specialized festivals, and declining cross-community interaction.
Music scene: creative fusions, old legends, and new hits
In summer 2025, the Latin music world is showing its most hybrid side yet. In reggaetón, cross-genre productions dominate: Karol G’s Tropicoqueta mixes reggaetón with merengue, vallenato, and salsa, and her track Latina Foreva is a summer hit. Bad Bunny has returned to classic salsa with Baile Inolvidable, recorded live with Puerto Rican musicians, incorporating plena into his crossovers. His 30 consecutive concerts in Puerto Rico, called Residenzia, are a huge success, all sold out, with surprise guests almost every night. Baile Inolvidable is the salsa summer hit on every dance floor. His final concert in early September will be broadcast live for free.
Meanwhile, few new timba songs are being released, and the style’s popularity is fading—something I personally welcome, as salsa is much more than just one branch of Cuban music. Instead, classic salsa tracks from the 90s and early 2000s are making a comeback. Artists who haven’t released music in years are returning, touring again, and accounts like SalsaRob on TikTok and Instagram are sharing exciting new finds every week.
In the bachata world, Prince Royce is making waves with Eterno, an album that mixes original bachata songs with pop and R&B adaptations such as How Deep Is Your Love in bachata style. Spain’s Naiara released Me Las Quitas in June, a track blending bachata with pop elements—though for me, this already leans too far into pure pop and loses its Latin character.
In some cases, these attempts to broaden the genre result in bachata tracks that verge on self-parody. Personally, I prefer the current releases from DJ Husky, Shama, Manuel Turizo, Montelier, Tutto Duran, Dani J, Mickey Then, Johandy, DerekVinci, SP Polaco, and others. While many of their tracks sound similar, rely on identical bass lines, and use heavy autotune, they’re still more danceable than most English-language covers. That said, telling them apart is becoming harder and harder.
One positive change is that in recent years, all these songs can now be found on major streaming platforms. In the salsa scene, Oscar Dudamel and Havana Caliente are making waves with new singles. The NewGenSalsa platform released ten new salsa tracks in July, including Que Sean Ellos by José Madera and Vente Conmigo by Linette.
